Utah State University - Master of Accounting

The Jon M. Huntsman School of Business offers a MAcc program that requires 30 credit hours to complete, and half the program will be tailored to a concentration selected by the student: Personal Financial Planning, Professional Accountancy, or Taxation. Core courses that all students will take include Accounting for Complex and Multinational Companies, Management of Database Systems, and Business Law and Professional Responsibilities. Graduates from the program have passed the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam with a 74.1 percent success rate in the first attempt, and they have also found opportunities at the Big Four accounting firms.

Students pursuing the Bachelor's degree at Utah State do have the ability to enroll in the Professional Accounting Program, which accelerates the process by taking some graduate courses in their senior year. Admission requirements for the program include holding an undergraduate degree with at least a 3.0 GPA over the last 60 credit hours from the program and GMAT scores being at the 50th percentile or better. Applicants can get a GMAT waiver if they had a 3.5 cumulative GPA in their Bachelor's degree at Utah State or 3.7 cumulative GPA in their accounting-related undergraduate degree from an accredited university.

Brigham Young University - Master of Accountancy

The Marriott School of Management provides two paths for their MAcc program - professional and tax-based. Both programs require 36 credit hours to complete and begin annually in the fall. While the program is geared toward undergraduates within an accounting discipline, graduates from other accredited universities that have studied in the field can complete the program in under two years. Around 160 students are administered into the program each year, and requirements include holding a 3.0 cumulative GPA in their undergraduate degree and submitting GMAT scores.

Example courses that students will take in their program options include Advanced Taxation, Accounting Data Analytics, Advanced Financial Statement Auditing, and Special Problems in Federal Taxation. Some courses are only available within specific semesters. Around 72.6 percent of students that have applied to the program have been admitted over the last five years, and the average grade these students have held is approximately 3.7 GPA.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Utah

Weber State University – Master of Taxation

The unique taxation-focused program at Weber State provides great flexibility for those looking to become prepared for the CPA exam. Regardless of pursuing the degree on-campus or online, the same quality education is given across the board. Students located in Weber and Davis counties will complete the program on campus and will attend one lecture each week for each course. These courses are blocked into three-hour segments. Online students will watch the recorded lecture at any time during the week.

Students can pick between one to five courses to take each semester. With the maximum number of courses taken in a semester, students can complete the program in as little as two semesters. Online students cannot complete the program on a self-paced basis, but they can watch the lectures at their convenience throughout the week and keep up with the rest of the class. Graduates from the program have gone on to careers as high-level executives and various financial advisors across the country. Admission requirements include a Bachelor’s degree, over 3.0 GPA, and GMAT scores.

University of Utah – Master of Business Administration

The David Eccles School of Business has a MAcc program on-campus, but their online accounting opportunity is within their MBA that can mostly be completed online. There is a three-day residency requirement that takes place in August in the first year, regardless of when the student chooses to start the program. There are three different semester starts throughout the year. 48 credit hours are needed to complete the coursework in the program, and students have the ability to blend online and on-campus experiences as the curriculum is the same for both options.

Students will be working together virtually through peer reviews, discussion boards, and group assignments. Online office hours will be available for each faculty member and there is always an option to contact professors and assistants directly through email. Some courses will have required discussions for further immersion in course topics. Graduates will have the same distinction on their degree regardless of how they choose to complete the program.
