Fairbanks offers fewer opportunity but has higher average salaries, and both of these locations host universities that prepare students for their accounting careers.
AACSB-Accredited Accounting Programs in Alaska
Students can expect a quality education with experienced faculty members and plenty of resources to explore when pursuing a degree at a school accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). There are two universities that have this designation for their undergraduate business programs, and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks has a specific Accounting certification.
University of Alaska-Fairbanks - Bachelor of Business Administration
The School of Management offers a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting, which is the exclusive program in the state of Alaska that is accredited with the AACSB Accounting certification. Students will gain technical and soft skills when preparing for their accounting career and take advantage of career services and internship opportunities provided by the school.
There are 120 credit hours needed to complete the program, including general education in arts, humanities, and social sciences. Degree-specific courses include Business Ethics, Accounting Information Systems, and Internal and Government Auditing. The curriculum provides an opportunity to prepare for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) licensure.
Students opting for a minor in accounting need to complete Principles of Financial Accounting, Principles of Managerial Accounting, and nine credit hours of upper-level electives that are related to accounting. A C- grade or higher must be earned in all courses to receive the accounting minor.
Benefits of taking the program at UAF is the low overall number of undergraduate students in the program. This gives an opportunity for students to have more time with faculty members who hold certifications in accounting and years of experience in accounting. Students have gone on to careers as budget analysts, financial managers, and certified internal auditors.
University of Alaska-Anchorage - Bachelor of Business Administration
The College of Business and Public Policy has accreditation in a number of their programs, including the Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting. Students will learn important skills such as preparing tax returns, and analyzing transactions to develop budget reports and make financial decisions for a company. They can also identify fraudulent activity and investigate the root of these problems.
120 credits are needed over a four-year span to complete the Bachelor's degree. Graduates from the program will be prepared to take licensure exams as a CPA, Certified Management Accountant, and Certified Fraud Examiner. This program does not have an online option and must be completed at the Anchorage campus.
Examples of courses that students will take in the major include Strategic Management, Corporate Finance, and Organizational Theory and Behavior. Two levels of Intermediate Accounting must be completed at the school or transferred over from an AACSB-accredited institution. At least 50 percent of business credits must be earned at UAA.
