Texas A&M University - Commerce

Master of Science in Accounting

The College of Business offers an MSA program that can be completed on-campus at Dallas and Commerce, and it is also fully available online. The Master of Accounting degree can also be a hybrid of the two for full customizability. There are 36 credit hours required to finish the program, and six additional credits for those that need to satisfy two prerequisite courses: Principles of Accounting and Intermediate Accounting. Transfer credit in similar courses will count if applicable, otherwise those courses will be taken in the first semester.

For those committed to the program, they can complete the curriculum in just over a year. They do offer a scheduling plan to finish within two years. Some of the core courses that are available include Business Law for Accountants, Financial statement Analysis, Forensic and Investigative Accounting, and students can choose up to two electives, such as Accounting Theory and Advanced Forensic Investigations. In some cases, the program will be able to prepare students for the Certified Public Accountant exam (varies among specific states). This curriculum is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi

Master of Business Administration - Accounting

Another Texas A&M college provides an online MBA that can be fully completed online. Graduates will be able to complete tasks such as forensic accounting investigations, being able to audit thoroughly with observing operations and procedures, and connecting communication between the financial and non-financial sectors of the organization. Up to nine credit hours can count toward transfer credit if desired. This curriculum is accredited by the AACSB.

36 credit hours are needed to complete the program, and students that have a Bachelor's degree within business administration are able to finish this specific Master's degree within a year. Admission requirements are holding a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 within the final 60 credit hours. Students must also submit an application and $50 fee, GRE or GMAT scores unless the student has over a 3.0 GPA, updated resume, personal essay, and official transcripts.

University of Texas - Dallas

Master of Science in Accounting

The Naveen Jindal School of Management has two options for students looking to complete an MSA degree. The first is a flex option that provides an asynchronous format and allows admissions in the fall, spring, and summer terms. The curriculum is 36 credit hours long and usually takes between 18 to 24 months to complete. Accredited by the AACSB, the education will prepare students to complete various certifications like the CPA, and there is over 30 electives to choose from to customize the degree for a specific career path.

The cohort option require the same amount of credit hours, but it will last the full 24 months. There are also no electives, and the curriculum is tailored toward preparation for the CPA exam. 100 percent of students that have completed the program passed the CPA exam in three of the last four academic years. Students have the option for a dual degree in Master of Science in Business Analytics, which takes an additional 20 months to complete. The majority of graduates from this program have taken a job within the Big Four accounting firms (Ernst and Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, etc.).

University of Dallas

Master of Business Administration – Accounting

The Satish and Yasmin Gupta College of Business offers an MBA that can be completed either online or on-campus in Irving (or a combination of the two options), and there are a number of concentrations to choose from, including Accounting. These electives will satisfy 12 of the 30 total credit hours required to graduate, and it can be finished within two to three years. There are no on-campus requirements for those taking the program online, and it is accredited by the AACSB.

Classes are divided up into various options – either 12 weeks, 6 weeks, or between terms. Students that have graduated the program have gone on to careers such as health services manager, information technology director, and chief information security officer. There is also a truncated version of the specialization, which is a Graduate Certificate in Accounting or Finance. There are six classes required to complete either certification.

Master of Science in Accounting

For those not interested in completing an MBA degree, a slightly faster option is pursuing the MSA. It is a 33-credit hour program that is either online or on-campus, but it can be completed in 18 months and there are no GRE or GMAT scores needed when applying. Course options within this curriculum include Accounting Information Systems, Financial Statement Analysis, and Accounting Research Methods. Graduates have gone on to career opportunities such as a tax manager and financial planning consultant.

Accreditation Options for Accounting Degrees in Texas

AACSB

The AACSB is the biggest accreditation organization and will be the most frequently seen when searching for accounting degrees in Texas, but there are some other options to consider. For those looking for a rigorous curriculum in something else than just Master’s degrees, the ACBSP oversees higher education within all levels. Since 1998, the ACBSP accredits all business programs across the world and has reached over 1,000 campuses. Their goal is to reach every business program and help them obtain a quality curriculum in order to best prepare students for a role in business. The association has on-campus visits to evaluate the education process and ensures a quality experience for students.

ATMAE

Another accreditation is the Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE). They have reviewed the Master’s degree in Accounting at the University of Texas at Tyler, and the school provides an advantage in the latest technical innovations (which is what this accreditation organization looks into) and having a slightly quicker curriculum with just 30 credit hours required. There is also no thesis required at the end of the program, and students do not need to have a significant background in accounting to be administered into it. As for the accreditation itself, it looks for continuous improvement in technology. After thorough review, they give an accreditation for four years. UTT’s Master’s degree in Accounting is one of only 13 programs recognized by ATMAE at that specific higher education level.

Regional, SACSCOC

There are also regional options. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) oversees higher education in the Southeastern-most United States. This stretches as far west as Texas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and states that touch along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast.
