The majority of the curriculum will consist of required courses with two elective opportunities. Up to three credit hours can be retaken during the program if the grade they received is a C or lower for GPA calculating purposes, but the original grade will remain on the transcript.
There are undergraduate course requirements before getting into the program, which include subjects such as intermediate accounting, cost accounting, tax accounting, and auditing. Prospective students will need to have an undergraduate degree and is recommended to have a 3.0 GPA or higher. If students do not maintain a 3.0 GPA when pursuing the degree, they will be placed on probation for a semester and dismissed if the minimum is not achieved. Alternatives to the MAcc program is taking the Master of Business Administration with an Accounting concentration, and the Executive MBA geared toward experienced professionals.
University of South Alabama - Master of Accounting
The Mitchell College of Business offers the MAcc program that is geared toward students that will take the CPA exam. The curriculum is divided up into 10 three-credit hour courses, and while the majority will focus on accounting courses, six credit hours will be reserved for core Master of Business Administration Courses (Analysis Using Information Systems, and Legal and Ethical Environment of Business) and the remaining six credit hours will be for electives. Elective opportunities not under the accounting umbrella will need to be approved by the program director.
Students have the ability to enter into the program in the fall and spring semesters. They must hold a Bachelor's degree in the field of accounting or similar from an accredited university. Submission of a GMAT score within the last five years is also required. There are nine prerequisite courses that will need to be taken before full admittance into the program, and all of them must have been completed with a C grade or higher. Up to six total credit hours can be transferred over into the program. All of these courses must have been passed with a B grade or higher to count. The online component will be ran with the Canvas learning management system, which is compatible with nearly all operating systems, such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS.
