Oklahoma State University - Master of Science in Accounting

The Spears School of Business offers an undergraduate and graduate program in accounting for students to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam in the state Oklahoma and other locations where the academic criteria is met. When combining both programs at the same time, some courses will count for credit in both degrees and typical completion is within five years.

Students will need to satisfy 33 or 34 credit hours based on the concentration selected for the program. These specializations are: Corporate Finance, Data Analytics and Systems, Financial Reporting and Auditing, and Tax. When pursuing the specialization in Data Analytics and Systems, students must complete Predictive Analytics and Prescriptive Analytics.

All concentrations have the option of selecting at least one elective course. These options include State and Local Taxation, Theory and Practice of Financial Management, or a graduate internship. There is also an option of taking the CPA exam review course in place of an elective.

Admission needs include updated resume, personal statement, and a letter of recommendation. One unique aspect of this program compared to others is the start of coursework begins in the summer. Final application deadline is by April 1st and the program will be completed either in the spring or summer semester.

Oklahoma City University - Master of Science in Accounting

The Meinders School of Business offers an MSA that requires 30 credit hours and will prepare students to sit for the CPA exam. Up to six credit hours can be earned when reviewing for the certification. While there are no online courses available, course schedules do allow for evening learning.

Among the core course topics that all students must pursue, there are topics in accounting theory, income tax, and auditing policies. Many business electives are available, and at least three courses specific to accounting must be selected. Other electives include effective leadership skills, forensics within economics, and ethics and business law.

Prior to entering the program, students must have credit for basic accounting courses, such as intermediate accounting, taxation, and business law. Up to 21 additional credit hours may needed for students that do not already have a background in business or accounting. Any courses that satisfy missing criteria can be taken through the university.

Those looking for an investigative career in accounting may consider gaining the certification in Financial Fraud and Forensic Accounting. 15 credit hours can be earned to receive this accreditation, and should the student consider the full Master's program later, these credits will transfer over.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Oklahoma

University of Oklahoma – Master of Accountancy

The Michael F. Price College of Business provides students with various formats to pursue the Master of Accountancy. In addition to completing the degree at the Norman campus, an identical version can be taken online while maintaining a professional career. This offers further flexibility to advance accounting skills and aids in the process to take the CPA exam.

33 credit hours are needed to complete the curriculum, which does not include foundational accounting courses that are needed for students without a business background. Examples of these introductory courses include cost accounting, auditing, and accounting information systems. These courses should have been completed at an AACSB-accredited institution and within the last eight years.

Course length is typically eight weeks for MBA courses and 16 weeks for accounting courses. Typically, the entire program can be completed within two years on a part-time basis if foundational courses are waived. Students may consider a three-credit International Financial Statement Analysis course that is taken abroad.

The application process requires submitting Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores, updated resume, and a completed online application with fee. A personal statement should include educational goals and why the prospective student selected the University of Oklahoma. It is optional to submit a letter of recommendation.

University of Tulsa – Master of Business Administration

The Collins College of Business is AACSB-accredited and offers the MBA at their campus, online, or a hybrid of both options. 37 credit hours are needed in the online version, which is divided into 25 core credits and 12 elective credits. A capstone project culminates the program, where students will display what they have learned in their education and obtain real experience when completing the project.

Online students can complete the program in a span of two years regardless of taking the traditional MBA or the specialized path with energy topics. This can also be completed with the part-time MBA available on campus with courses scheduled in the evening. Examples of courses in the core curriculum include Financial Management, Corporate and Business Strategy, and Issues in Business Ethics.

Students are administered into the online program in the fall semester. In order to be considered, prospective students should have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and meet foundational prerequisites. They should have received a 3.0 cumulative GPA in the undergraduate program.

Submissions of GMAT scores are needed in this business college unless they meet waiver criteria. This can be accomplished with high academic marks from a Bachelor’s degree in business administration, demonstrating high grades in advanced business courses, or having many years of professional experience.
