AACSB-Accredited Accounting Programs in Hawaii
Students looking at accounting careers can be guaranteed a thorough education at schools that have been designated by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These are programs that have been verified by an established agency and will likely have the curriculum needed to meet academic requirements for state licensure. The University of Hawaii at Hilo and Manoa offer accounting courses in various disciplines.
University of Hawaii at Manoa - Master of Accounting
The Shidler College of Business at UH-Manoa offers a Master of Accounting (MAcc) that has 30 credit hours to complete, which is scattered across 10 different courses. Seven courses are part of the core curriculum and students choose three electives. In combination with a Bachelor's degree in accounting, this will satisfy the 150 credit hours needed to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.
Examples of courses that students can choose include Accounting Theory and Development, Financial Statement Analysis, and Taxation of Business Entities. 18 total credit hours must be completed in courses at the 600-level or higher. This means a high-level course must be included in the elective options picked by the student.
Students that are enrolled in the undergraduate accounting program at Shidler can choose the 3/2 MAcc option, which offers a cheaper and more convenient opportunity to get academic CPA licensure requirements. Enrollment into the program must take place at least two semesters prior to graduation, and students should hold at least a 3.4 GPA.
Prerequisites for the program include two levels of introductory accounting. Those without an accounting degree must take additional courses in financial accounting, federal taxation, auditing, and accounting information systems. If the undergraduate accounting degree does not have some of these courses, they will need to be fulfilled.
