University of New Mexico - Master of Accounting

The Anderson Master of Accounting is offered through the School of Management. This is a 33 credit hour curriculum that fulfills the academic requirements to pursue the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination. Students can choose from a variety of concentrations, including Professional for non-accounting majors, Advanced for a quicker generalist path, Information Assurance, and Tax.

Students can explore campus organizations to further their expertise in their future business career. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners work with others to improve their skills in identifying fraud and financial statement analysis. Beta Alpha Psi specializes in financial education and enhances networking opportunity and allows students to apply for additional scholarships.

Examples of elective courses that students can pursue include Personal Tax Planning, Information Systems Security, and Database Management. Graduates have gone on to work at the big four accounting firms (Deloitte, Ernst and Young, etc.) and top government agencies, such as the Central Intelligence Agency and Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Prospective students entering higher education can choose the combination of a Bachelor of Business Administration with an Accounting concentration in connection with the Master's degree to receive the 153 total credit hours in a quicker time frame. Those not looking into a full Master's program may consider the Graduate Certificate in Management, which requires 15 credit hours to complete.

New Mexico State University - Master of Accountancy

The College of Business offers a Master of Accountancy that requires 30 credit hours to complete the curriculum. Accounting courses represent 21 credit hours of the program, and there are nine credit hours reserved for electives. No comprehensive exam or thesis is needed that culminates the program, but the latter can be selected for up to six credit hours to prepare for a doctorate degree.

Some requirements in the curriculum include pursuing a research class in the core accounting courses. This can include Federal Tax Research or Ethics in Accounting. For the electives, taking Ethics and Professionalism in Accounting is required, and the remaining six credit hours are chosen by the student.

Admission requirements include holding an undergraduate degree from an AACSB-accredited program with a 3.0 cumulative GPA within their accounting core. Examples of prerequisite accounting courses are topics in financial accounting, federal taxation, and auditing theory.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores are required in the application process unless various criteria is met. This includes having a 3.25 cumulative GPA from the undergraduate degree, or they have already received a business certification or Master's degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in New Mexico

Eastern New Mexico University – Master of Business Administration

There is no online Master’s degree in the accounting discipline available in New Mexico. As an alternative, a Master of Business Administration can be pursued at ENMU’s campus in Portales or conveniently online. This program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs.

30 credit hours and maintaining a 3.0 GPA throughout the program is needed to fulfill curriculum requirements. There are 10 courses that students will take that are all preselected and explores various business management categories. Specifically in accounting, students will explore planning and implementing accounting tasks from the management lens.

Some courses, including Accounting for Managers, are only available during specific semesters. Students should review course availability to determine the best schedule to graduate in a certain time frame. There is an opportunity to transfer up to nine credit hours into the program that have been earned in the last six years.

Admission requirements include having prerequisite courses needed to enter the program, which includes foundational material in microeconomics, finance, marketing, accounting, and more. This can be completed at the university through the Common Professional Component package prior to entering the full MBA program. Students should send their GMAT scores if they have less than a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.
