University of Southern Maine - Bachelor of Science in Business Administration
The School of Business provides a number of majors to choose from when pursuing the undergraduate program in business administration, and one of those disciplines is in accounting. This major is ideal for students that are looking to pursue a Master's degree in the same field in later years, and will also cut down on the amount of coursework needed with foundational courses waived.
Obtaining a Bachelor's degree in a business discipline is required to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). This degree will be applied to the vast majority of the 150 credit hours needed to be collected before taking the examination for licensure. This Bachelor's degree offers the typical 120 credit hours, including the accounting major with 21 credit hours of education.
At least a C- grade is needed in the 100 and 200-level courses, and this upgrades to a C grade in 300 and 400-level courses. Outside of the accounting major, other categories in the curriculum include the university general requirements, non-business and business cores, and general electives. Examples of courses in the accounting major include Financial Reporting, Accounting Information Systems, and Auditing and Assurance.
Prospective students entering the undergraduate program should have completed a high school degree or equivalent with high academic merit. Standardized testing scores are no longer needed to be submitted with the application. Those transferring from a different college must submit transcripts from previous schools, resume, and a personal statement.
