University of Nevada-Las Vegas - Master of Science in Accounting

The accounting department of UNLV offers a Master of Science in Accounting that prepares students for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exams to complete the process of licensure. Outcomes for this degree include gaining the ability to utilize information technology to solve accounting problems and communicating with others on a professional level. 30 credit hours in the curriculum will also complete many academic requirements for state licensure.

Students are able to pursue the program on a full-time or part-time basis based on their work schedules. 15 credit hours are reserved for core accounting courses, 12 credit hours worth of electives, and a three-credit capstone course. The final course can be geared toward federal tax, auditing, or management.

Prospective students should have prerequisites in foundational accounting courses (financial reporting, auditing, law, etc.). Those without proper background will need to complete additional courses before entering the main program.

Application requirements include holding a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Other submissions include the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores and a recent resume. This GMAT score can be waived for those that have a 3.25 GPA or higher in main undergraduate accounting courses.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Nevada

University of Nevada-Reno - Master of Accountancy

The other institution that is AACSB-accredited in the state of Nevada is the University of Nevada in Reno, and they offer the online Master of Accountancy through the College of Business. The curriculum consists of skills that will help eventual graduate improve on their teamwork and communication capability along with advanced accounting skills in auditing and analyzing financial statements.

10 total courses are needed in the program, which breaks down into five core courses that explore theory of accounting and taxation, and five electives. These are three accounting electives and two non-accounting electives, with examples being Taxation of C Corporations, Personal Branding, and Forensic Accounting. Prospective students are able to get into the program in the fall or spring semester with deadlines by April 15th and November 15th for late admission, respectively.

Admission requirements include having a 2.75 cumulative GPA or a 3.0 GPA over the last two years of the Bachelor's degree. An accounting discipline is not required to be considered for this program, but the degree should have been earned at an accredited institution. Those with an accounting degree from an accredited program can waive GMAT scores with a 3.3 GPA or higher.

Along with the GMAT scores for some prospective students, other application submissions that are needed include transcripts designating appropriate education completion, updated and detailed resume, and personal statement that covers career goals. Students should have proficiency in working with Microsoft Office software, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
