University of Colorado-Boulder - Master of Science in Accounting

The Leeds School of Business offers an MSA degree that helps students become proficient in auditing, financial analysis, and risk management. They will be prepared in taking on organizational financial needs regardless of sector. The curriculum consists of six required courses and four of five elective options for 30 total credit hours. Highlights include the capstone project that focuses on issues within the professional industry, and an elective will take on rotating topics in business.

University of Northern Colorado - Master of Accounting

The Monfort College of Business will help students become prepared for the CPA exam and will generally help meet the 150-hour requirement for licensing within the state for those that have pursued a four-year undergraduate degree in the field of accounting. One of the benefits at UNC is smaller class size, which gives students more accessibility with the faculty. Graduates have seen a 98 percent success rate in job placement six months after completing the program.

Students do have to meet certain prerequisite requirements in order to begin the program's curriculum. Any courses that have not been fulfilled will be added to their study if admitted. Undergraduates can complete up to nine credit hours during their senior year to be admitted into the program. 30 total credit hours are needed to fulfill the degree, with the credit hours being divided up into 18 core courses and 12 accounting electives. Example courses include Contemporary Issues in Auditing Topics and Tax, Advanced Financial Management, and Governmental and Institutional Accounting.

Review of Top Online Master of Accounting Programs in Colorado

Colorado State University – Master of Business Administration

The College of Business offers one of the top online MBA programs in the state with a variety of focuses to choose from, including accounting. There are five months that students can start the program: August, October, January, March, and May. Requirements for the program include students holding an undergraduate degree with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher, four years of professional work experience, and submissions in the application process should include an updated resume, statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation. No GMAT or GRE scores are needed for submission.

42 total credit hours are needed to complete the program, which can take as little as 21 months, or five semesters. Students have the ability to take the program for up to five years. Most of the curriculum consists of core courses, but up to six credit hours are reserved for electives. Courses directly focused on accounting include Managerial Accounting, Financial Reporting and Analysis, Corporate Risk Management, and Ethical, Legal, and Regulatory Issues.

University of Colorado-Denver – Master of Business Administration

The MBA program through UC-Denver has 15 different specializations for students to fully customize their curriculum and get them on a direct path to their career. Examples of concentrations to choose from include Accounting, Finance, Risk Management and Insurance, and Taxation. 48 total credit hours are needed regardless of concentration, and the curriculum is divided up into 30 hours of core courses and 18 hours of electives – three of those elective credits will be used toward international topics. Courses that will be taken under the Accounting specialization include Financial Accounting, Management Accounting, and Tax Planning for Managers.

Students have the ability to complete most of the program online, or a blend of online and on-campus opportunities. All core courses are available online in the fall and spring semesters, but not all electives are available online nor each semester. The program can be completed in as little as 16 months or as long as five years plus an additional semester. Different variations of the MBA include the 11-month MBA and the Executive MBA. These are less customizable with no electives or specializations, but the programs can be completed quicker. The Executive MBA is more geared toward experienced working professionals.
