Michigan State University - Master of Science in Accounting

The Broad College of Business offers one of the top higher education programs in the accounting field. This program consists of a 30-credit hour curriculum that can be completed in one year, and it must be taken on campus at East Lansing. There are three concentrations students can choose from to pursue the degree with: Information Systems, Public and Corporate Accounting, and Taxation. Students completing the Bachelor of Arts degree at MSU can apply nine credits toward the Master's program and complete both degrees within a span of five years.

MSU's accounting degree has placed 93 percent of their graduates in the job field, and 80 percent of them were able to complete the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam on the very first attempt. The latter number is a jump from the nearly 55 percent that pass the exam immediately. One of the unique aspects of this program is the Ernst and Young Communication Center. This is a service sponsored by a Big Four accounting firm that helps students practice and improve their communication skills, such as mock interviews, critical resume review, and presentation rehearsals.

Oakland University - Master of Accounting

Through the Department of Accounting and Finance, Oakland University students are able to obtain a Master's degree in accounting with concentrations in Assurance, Taxation, or a general overview of the field. There is a single required course in each concentration - Advanced Auditing for Assurance and Federal Income Tax II for Taxation - and students will have an option to take two out of three courses as electives. Eventual graduates will improve on their analytical and communication skills in terms of organizational finances, follow ethical procedures and regulations, and be prepared to take the CPA exam at the completion of the program.

Admittance into the graduate school at Oakland University requires official transcripts from a four-year accredited institution, two letters of recommendation, current resume, and GMAT or GRE scores that have been received over the fast five years. The latter option can be waived if the student already holds a Master's degree, received a Bachelor's degree from an AACSB-accredited school with over a 3.5 GPA, or the student has earned or will earn the Bachelor's degree with an overall 3.5 GPA or above.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Michigan

University of Michigan-Dearborn – Master of Science in Accounting

The College of Business provides an MSA degree that can only be completed on-campus, but there is online coursework available. Students also have the ability to choose between full-time and part-time enrollment in order to continue their professional career. The program will administer students that do not have a background in the accounting field. If there are no prerequisites needed before entering the program, full-time students can complete the program within 12 to 16 months. Undergraduate students at UM-Dearborn can transfer up to 12 total credits toward the Master’s degree.

Another option that can be completed online is a dual degree between the MBA and a Master of Science in Finance. This requires up to 66 credit hours to complete and students have the ability to also complete courses on-campus or a hybrid combination of the two. There is still an opportunity to pursue the Accounting concentration within the MBA program. Examples of elective accounting courses are Financial Reporting, Information Technology Auditing, and Financial Statement Analysis.

University of Michigan-Flint – Master of Science in Accounting

The School of Management offers a fully online and hybrid MSA program that will prepare students for the CPA exam. This program is geared toward any individual regardless of time available, pursuing the degree full-time or chipping away at the curriculum while maintaining their professional career. All course management is accomplished on the Blackboard learning system. Lectures are distributed through video casts and on-demand content, and students and faculty can interact through message boards and chat rooms.

The Net+ structure is the hybrid format where students can complete 60 percent of their coursework online and the remainder in a traditional classroom setting. Weekend residency on Friday and Saturday is required and students will meet twice per semester. Foundational courses that are eligible to be waived from the program if a student has credit for it are Accounting for Managers and Intermediate Financial Reporting. The rest of the curriculum is divided up into 21 credit hours for core courses and 9 credit hours for MSA or MBA electives.
