AACSB-Accredited Accounting Programs in Oregon

The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has accredited multiple institutions for their strong business programs in the state of Oregon. Three schools have received accounting-specific designations, including the University of Oregon. While there is no specific accounting degree available online, many topics in finance and accounting can be pursued with an online MBA program.

University of Oregon - Master of Accounting

The Lundquist College of Business offers the Master of Accounting that requires 45 credit hours to complete, but can be obtained in just one calendar year. This includes all academic requirements to sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. In order to gain licensure in Oregon, all four parts of the CPA exam must be passed along with the written ethics exam.

Five core accounting courses are needed in the curriculum, along with two electives within accounting that are chosen to customize the program. In addition, general business topics are selected as five electives, and business development is offered as a one-credit seminar. A September orientation is required for all students, while a summer orientation is optional.

Orientation in the fall spans four days and includes peer exercises (both academically and physically) for problem solving, finance bootcamp, and meeting with recruiters. The June orientation is just one half-day and prepares students for the transition to graduate school. Elective options includes Business Database Management Systems, New Venture Planning, and International Accounting.

For prospective students entering higher education, the business college also offers an ability to complete the 150 credit hours needed for state licensure in a four-year span. This would include the completion of both the Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the accounting discipline. Application requires a high school transcript with high academic merit and a 500-word essay.

University of Portland - Master of Business Administration

The Pamplin School of Business offers an MBA that requires 39 credit hours to complete, or 13 total courses. Students that are able to test out of the foundational statistics courses will have their curriculum truncated by three credit hours. There is not an online opportunity to pursue this program, but students will be taking courses during the evening hours to convenience those with work schedules.

Students will gain advanced core business skills, including further theory and application of financial planning and accounting practices. This includes approaching problems with data-driven analytics and using critical thinking to process issues and come up with defining conclusions. They also will sharpen communication skills when working with teams and presenting information to other organization departments.

Six different concentrations can be chose from, including Finance, Operations and Technology Management, and Sustainability. Within the Finance specialization, courses that students can choose from include New Venture Finance and Accounting, Income Tax Planning, and Personal Financial Planning. Four courses, or 12 total credit hours, from a group of financial topics will be selected.

Unique aspects of the program include adding six credit hours of values perspective courses. These topics include sustainability for an organization, social responsibility, and cross-cultural management. The program culminates with a capstone project that develops a business strategy by applying what they have learned throughout the program.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Oregon

Northwest Christian University – Master in Business Administration

This Christian-focused MBA program can be completed in just one year and provides a fully online format for the convenience of working professionals. Students can choose between Management and Nonprofit Leadership for the concentration. This program is accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education.

Students will gain an understanding of advanced business management and administration topics to further their career with this program. Courses that all students will take regardless of concentration selection include Managerial Accounting, Managerial Statistics, and Managerial Economics. Skills will also be gained in oral and written communication when reporting on these topics.

Courses are offered in an eight-week format, which allows for more admission opportunities. Admission into the program takes place six times each year and there are no Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores required in the process. Students do not need to have a business background, but gaining foundational coursework requires an additional year.

Requirements for admission include having a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and holding a 3.0 cumulative GPA. An updated resume should be submitted along with a statement of purpose that describes goals for the online MBA in 500 words. Application materials must received two weeks before one of the six starting dates.

Southern Oregon University – Master of Business Administration

Many of the MBA programs can be completed online in just 16 months at Southern Oregon University. Management topics in business, along with advanced concepts of accounting, organizational behavior, and information systems, are explored throughout the curriculum. 45 credit hours are needed over a span of 13 total courses.

The Accounting concentration has a further look in understanding and analyzing corporate financial statements and determining how to make important decisions for investments and acquisitions with evidence-based analysis. This includes reviewing information systems that reports and secures financial information and is part of the process in auditing.

For the online component, students must have modern desktop or laptop computers with high-speed internet access. They need to have webcam and microphone attachments to participate in virtual courses and discussions, and applications such as Microsoft Office for word processing and spreadsheets to complete assignments. Google apps can also be used in this program.

Admission requirements include having a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and has a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher. This must be designated on the official transcripts sent in during admission. There is a potential to be admitted with a 2.75 GPA or higher with three years of work experience and three professional references.
