AACSB-Accredited Accounting Programs in North Dakota

There are two universities in the state of North Dakota that have received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). These two institutions are the most popular schools for higher education in the state, but neither have specific accreditation in accounting. The University of North Dakota has an additional benefit of online learning for students.

University of North Dakota - Master of Accountancy

The College of Business and Public Administration offers the Master of Accountancy that is both available on-campus and online for student convenience. There are varying tracks available where students that do not have experience in accounting can take a longer curriculum or others that hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting can pursue an abbreviated version.

While the program is available online, students should check state requirements to determine if they can sit for the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. The entire curriculum can be completed online and there are no requirements to visit campus. Typically, students will graduate the accelerated format, also known as the Practitioner track, in 20 months.

In order to gain entry into the Practitioner track, students must have a Bachelor's degree in the field of accounting with coursework completed in the topics of auditing, managerial accounting, and taxation. The longer format, known as the Fundamentals track, will accept any Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.

Other requirements in the admission process includes submitting an application with fee, official transcripts that designate the Bachelor's degree earned, personal statement describing goals for the program, and three letters of reference. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores are also needed unless the student as earned a 3.0 GPA or higher in their undergraduate program.

North Dakota State University - Master of Accountancy

The College of Business offers the Master of Accountancy that is available on a full-time or part-time basis at the Fargo campus. There is no online opportunity, but students that have a background in accounting courses can complete this degree in as little as 11 months. Students can earn the CPA and related certifications, like the Certified Management Accountant designation.

30 credit hours are needed to complete the degree, and there are four courses required in the curriculum for all students. The remainder are elective options, with five courses that dive into advanced accounting topics. One of the courses must be from the following: Consumer Behavior, Investment Analysis and Management, Human Resource Management, or Special Topics within accounting.

Admission requirements include gaining an undergraduate degree with a 3.0 GPA or higher, or the submission of GMAT scores if they are lower. A statement of purpose is needed to describe goals for the program. Prerequisite courses for students that do not have a background in accounting include cost management systems, foundational tax accounting, and foundational auditing.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in North Dakota

Minot State University – Master of Science in Management

The College of Business offers an online version of the customizable Master’s degree in management. Students will be prepared to advance their career into management level in their respective field, or they can choose to continue their studies for a doctorate degree. Subjects covered in this program include accounting, financial management, and statistics.

Students should choose the MSM program over the Master of Business Administration if they have less of a background in business and are considering further studying. 30 total credit hours are needed to fulfill curriculum requirements. Examples of courses students may take include Strategic Marketing, Statistical and Quantitative Applications, and Financial Management and Accounting.

Culminating the program, students will have a capstone course that develops a business plan, completes a research project, or performs a case study. As an alternative, students can complete a thesis if they are looking to pursue management study for a doctorate program. The thesis must be completed individually and the topic must be approved by a program advisor in advance.

Admission times take place in the fall or spring semester, and the program can be completed in 9 to 18 months based on business education background. Graduates have gone on to take jobs as social media managers, human resource managers, and managing consultants. This program has been accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE).

University of Mary – Master of Business Administration

The flexible MBA offered by the University of Mary is geared toward business professionals looking to advance their career and optimize industry practices with quantitative skills. This program can be completed online or at various local campus locations in North Dakota, such as Bismarck and Fargo. There are additional locations out-of-state at Billings, Montana, and Fort Riley, Kansas.

Students may complete the IACBE-accredited program in as little as 16 months with the completion of 36 total credit hours. There are seven specializations to choose from, including Project Management, Public Administration, and Business Operations. Within the core curriculum, there is Managerial Finance and Managerial Accounting courses.
