Are there online Master of Accounting programs in Kansas?
Yes, there are multiple online Accounting Masters degree programs at Kansas universities. Below is an in-depth review of a few of the top online accounting programs available.
University of Kansas – Master of Accountancy
The School of Business does not offer a full online program for the Master of Accountancy, but there are select courses available to create a hybrid model of the program. 30 credit hours are needed for experienced students in accounting and could be completed in less than one year. The 10-week course format in the spring allows for a CPA examination review for students that are ready to continue the state licensure process.
Students have the opportunity to specialize in Assurance Auditing, Consulting Services, Corporate, and Tax. For example, a student that is looking to have a career that has more of a focus on state and local taxation laws and estate and trust planning would consider pursuing the Tax concentration. Regardless of choice, the same amount of credits will be needed.
For those that do not have foundational experience in accounting will need to complete more courses to finish the program. In this case, the program will require up to two years to gain the degree, and even further for part-time students maintaining a full-time job. Common courses among the concentrations include Advanced Taxation, Accounting Theory, and Accounting Analytics.
Admission requirements include holding a Bachelor’s degree in the accounting field or similar. Potential students will be evaluated on their GPA, letters of recommendation, prior volunteer or internship work, and other activities or professional work experience they have.
Fort Hays State University – Master of Business Administration
This online MBA program requires 34 credit hours to complete and is open to all students of varying previous disciplines. Those that do not have an education background in business will take an additional 12 credit hours to catch up with the rest of the students. There are various concentrations to choose from, including Accounting, but that particular concentration is only available on campus.
Courses required in the Accounting concentration include Advanced Accounting, Advanced Tax Procedure, and an option of choosing Advanced Auditing or a CPA preparation class. Students looking to have a fully online experience will need to choose a related category or pursue the general MBA and pick from courses that are available online.
Students must review what courses are available online or on-campus and during what semesters they are available. Only a handful of courses are available in the summer months and a few concentrations have them always available, such as Finance and Human Resource Management. The online courses are distributed through the Blackboard learning management system.
The application process requires the submission of official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, updated resume, personal statement, and GMAT or GRE scores. Foundational courses include economics, accounting theories, marketing concepts and quantitative methods. These are online-only courses that are available during specific semesters.
