University of Rhode Island - Master of Science in Accounting

The College of Business Administration provides a Master's degree with an accounting discipline for those looking to gain academic requirements for sitting at the Certified Public Accounting (CPA) exam. This program is offered at both the Kingston and Providence campus. While there is no online-exclusive format, courses are available to take during the day, in the evening, and on weekends.

Students have the ability to pursue the program on a part-time or full-time basis, and those maintaining a full schedule could receive the degree in as little as one year. Those without a background in accounting or have an undergraduate degree at a non-accredited university may need to take prerequisites that will extend the curriculum.

Examples of accounting electives that can be taken in the program include Advanced Problems in Accounting, Law and Accounting, and International Accounting. Many business electives are available to customize the program. There is also an opportunity to pursue an internship for further hands-on experience.

This curriculum will satisfy CPA licensure requirements in the states of Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. Providence College - Master of Business Administration

Students can pursue the MBA at at Providence College with a unique Accounting Cohort format for those looking to advance their career in the field. Up to six transfer credits can be utilized if needed, and work experience is generally required for admission. In some cases during the application process, prospective students will be contacted for an interview.

The MBA curriculum is divided up into 12 different courses. Nine courses will be part of the core curriculum and all students will be taking these, and three courses are reserved for elective options. Examples of courses in the core curriculum include Accounting Ethics, Strategic Management in a Global Business, and Statistics and Modelling Analytics.

The Accounting Cohort format gives an ability for students to complete the MBA in 13 or 14 months with admission and graduation in the summer months. This particular path can also be taken in a part-time or full-time format, or combined with the 4+1 flexible pathway that adds the undergraduate program. Accounting and Decision Making in Organizations is waived for a third elective.

During the application process, prospective students will need to submit Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores. This can be waived if they obtained a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a 3.5 cumulative GPA. Required foundational topics include micro and macroeconomics, statistical analysis, and financial and managerial accounting.

Online Master of Accounting Programs in Rhode Island

Bryant University – Master of Professional Accountancy

The School of Business offers a Master of Professional Accountancy with the ability to add a Tax concentration. This program gives students the ability to sit for the CPA exam by meeting necessary academic requirements. Courses can be pursued on-campus or in an online format.

Students with an accounting background need as little as two terms to complete the degree, which is in a span of eight months. The program is geared toward full-time students to accomplish this, and admission times take place in January, May, and September. In total, the curriculum will have 10 courses.

For the Tax concentration, students have the option to complete the program in consecutive summer and fall semesters, or in two summer semesters. Examples of courses students may take in the program is Accounting Theory, Sales and Exchanges of Property, and Partnership Income Tax Problems. There should be prerequisites met in intermediate accounting topics, taxation, cost management, and auditing.

Submissions needed for admission consideration includes at least one letter of recommendation, updated resume, and personal statement describing goals for the program. GMAT scores are needed unless prospective students meet waiver criteria. This includes having at least three years of work experience or receiving a 3.4 cumulative GPA or higher from an AACSB-accredited program.

Salve Regina University – Master of Business Administration

The online-exclusive MBA program from the Newport-based university offers a variety of concentrations to consider when preparing for advanced business education. 36 credit hours are needed to complete the program, which spans 12 total courses, and takes between 18 to 24 months to complete. This program is accredited by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education.

While there are no concentrations in accounting, these topics are explored within the required courses. Examples include Financial Management (also in nonprofit), Managerial Accounting, and Building Value Through Marketing. Concentration opportunities include Nonprofit Management, Health Care Administration, and Social Ventures.

Certain technical requirements are needed for students to succeed in their online program that utilizes the Canvas learning management system. While some course materials and applications can be accessed on a mobile device, it is recommended to have a desktop or laptop computer with a Windows or Mac operating system.
