Louisiana State University - Master of Accounting

The E.J. Ourso College of Business offers a Master's degree that requires 30 credit hours to complete and is geared as an additional fifth year for students studying in a related undergraduate discipline. There is potential for students to enter into the program without a background in accounting, but they must have shown academic success in their discipline and will need to take prerequisites courses such as Income Tax Accounting, Cost Analysis and Control, and Auditing. Admission requirements include holding an undergraduate degree with at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, and submitting a GMAT score unless the student recorded above a 3.7 GPA and three letters of recommendation. There is no writing requirement in the application process.

Admittance into the program happens in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students have the ability to choose from the following specializations: Financial Reporting and Assurance Services, Internal Audit, and Taxation Services. Those taking the undergraduate program at LSU can complete the Master's degree and a spring internship in a total amount of five years. There are opportunities for graduate assistantships that requires 10 hours of work per week. Students will be prepared for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam.

Louisiana Tech University - Master of Accountancy

Students have the option of taking a MAcc program and one of the biggest institutions in the state at Baton Rouge. The 30-credit degree will prepare students for the CPA exam with a curriculum that focuses on business management and accounting theory. Up to six credit hours can be transfered into the program as long as the courses were graded as a B or higher. Transferring students still must complete at least 15 credits toward 500-level courses. Graduates have gone on to take positions at the Big Four accounting firms and government organizations like the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service.

Examples of courses taken in the program include Advanced Managerial Accounting, Advanced Auditing, and Business Law for Accountants. Grade requirements for admission into the program includes holding an undergraduate degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher, GMAT scores that are at 450 or higher and have been earned within the last five years, and a composite score of 1,110 (200 times GPA, then adding GMAT). If 90 percent of the score is achieved in all three categories, students can enter the program on a conditional basis.

University of Louisiana-Lafayette – Master of Science in Accounting

The B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration has an accelerated online Master’s degree option that is geared toward working professionals wanting to advance within accounting. Provides flexibility in part-time or full-time enrollment and the tuition costs are the same no matter where the student is pursuing the degree. 30 credit hours are needed to complete the curriculum, which prepares students for the CPA exam and it will fulfill the 150-hour requirement in studies needed for CPA licensure. Courses are taken in eight-week sessions and it provides an easy path for part-time students to solely focus on one subject at a time. Courses will typically meet during evening hours in person. The program will take an estimated 18 months to complete with 33 credit hours needed. With a limited amount of students admitted into the program, contact is easier with faculty members and frequent meetups with the dean to further optimize the academic courses taken.

Students should have prior coursework in foundational and basic business subjects, such as accounting, microeconomics, business finance, management, and analytical tools for decision making. Required courses to take in the program include Managerial Economics, Financial Management Policies, and Organizational Behavior. After enrolling into the program, students will have up to six years to complete the degree. All grades must be higher than C, and students transferring up to six credit hours must have obtained a B grade in those courses.
