University of Southern Mississippi – Master of Business Administration

While a specific discipline in accounting is not available online at USM, there is an option to take the Master of Business Administration to gain managerial accounting skills. This is a program that can be completed in two years for those that enroll in the fall or summer semesters. Students seeking graduate assistantships will need to apply by the same deadline as summer admission.

Other course that students will take in the core curriculum include Financial Management, Global Business Systems, and Analytical Decision Making. Certain classes will only be available in specific semesters, so students will need to consult with their advisors to create a manageable schedule for on-time graduation. While there are no on-campus visits required, students may have to attend live online lectures.

USM utilizes the Canvas learning management system for course distribution. Recommended technical requirements include a Windows or Mac-based operating system on a modern computer with high-speed internet access. Some programs that students may need for their courses include Microsoft Office 365, Yuja, Java Runtime Environment, and an anti-virus software.

Admission requirements include holding a business-related undergraduate degree with at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. Prospective students should submit GMAT or Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores, resume with cover letter, statement of purpose, and multiple letters of recommendation. Students will need to take an additional year if admitted in the spring due to the capstone project and comprehensive exams only offered in that semester.

Jackson State University – Master of Business Administration

There is a Master of Professional Accountancy available through the College of Business, but students looking for a convenient online program will need to take the MBA. This format is geared toward working professionals that need to maintain other obligations in addition to their studies. 30 credit hours are needed at a minimum, and there are topics in financial statement analysis, managerial accounting, and statistical business decisions.

Courses are delivered in five different eight-week sessions during the course of one calendar year. Students are able to complete the program in one year if they are able to take up to six credit hours, or two courses, in each term. There is an option to take just one course if the schedule becomes too demanding.

Major topics covered in the program in addition to accounting include economics, management, and marketing. Prerequisites will be needed for students that do not have a background in business, which will add on to the curriculum. Students that hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution will typically have what is needed to pursue the program.

Admission submission requirements include two official transcripts that designate the completion of a Bachelor’s degree, GRE or GRE scores over the last five years, and either an updated resume or personal statement that describes qualifications to succeed in the program. GMAT or GRE scores can be waived if they hold at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA from the undergraduate degree or already have a doctorate degree.
